The basics

What is Free Kindy?

Free Kindy is a Queensland Government initiative that funds 15 hours of kindergarten a week, for up to 40 weeks of the year, for every child in their kindergarten year, the year before school, at an approved kindergarten program.

Little Scholars' kindergarten program meets that approval standard at all 17 campuses, so every family enrolled with us can access the funding. There's nothing extra to apply for: because we're an approved provider, it's applied automatically once your child is enrolled and eligible.

Free Kindy funds the kindergarten program itself, 15 hours a week, completely free. Because we run as long day care rather than a stand-alone 7.5-hour session, your child's two Kindy days also include wraparound care either side of those funded hours, with your Child Care Subsidy applied.

Free Kindy funds 15 hours of the kindergarten program a week, for 40 weeks of the year, completely free. Because we run as long day care rather than a stand-alone 7.5-hour session, your child's two Kindy days also include wraparound care either side of the funded hours, with your Child Care Subsidy applied to that time, and to the other 12 weeks of the year. Most families are left with a small, manageable gap fee, and your child gets a full day of care alongside their kindergarten program. The program

Our kindergarten program.

A government-approved program, taught by a qualified early childhood teacher at every campus. Children learn through play, building the skills that carry them into school.

Language & literacy

Conversational Reading and everyday storytelling build vocabulary and early reading skills.

Numeracy

Counting, patterns and problem-solving woven into hands-on, real-world play.

Social & emotional

New friendships, turn-taking and emotional regulation, guided by the same teacher all year.

Transition to School

Lunchboxes, shoelaces, uniforms and a school visit: the practical side of starting Prep.

Why it matters

More educators,
not fewer.

Because our non-contact roles are staffed separately rather than counted in ratio, there are consistently more educators available to children than the regulations require.

It costs us more. It's the single biggest thing that changes a child's day.

Free Kindy,

What is Free Kindy?
Free Kindy is a Queensland Government initiative that funds 15 hours of kindergarten a week, for up to 40 weeks of the year, for every child in the year before school at an approved kindergarten program. Little Scholars' kindergarten program meets that approval standard at all 17 campuses.
Is my child eligible for Free Kindy?
Yes, if they turn four by 30 June in the year they're enrolled in kindergarten, the year before school. There's no income test. Every eligible child receives the same funding, no matter your family's circumstances.
My child turns four just after 30 June: can they still access Free Kindy this year?
Not this year. The cutoff is fixed at 30 June, so a child who turns four in July or later starts their kindergarten year, and their Free Kindy funding, the following year. Talk to your Campus Manager about what your child's program looks like in the meantime.
Is Free Kindy available at every Little Scholars campus?
Yes. All 17 campuses across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Redlands and Ipswich deliver the government-approved kindergarten program, so every family enrolled with us can access Free Kindy.
How many hours and weeks does Free Kindy actually cover?
15 hours a week, for 40 weeks of the year: the state school terms. Our kindergarten sessions run for 7.5 hours a day, so those 15 hours are usually delivered across your child's two Kindy days. We run our program year-round, so the funding applies across those 40 weeks wherever your child attends.
What happens in the other 12 weeks of the year?
The 40 funded weeks cover the school terms; the remaining 12 weeks fall outside Free Kindy. During those weeks, the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) applies to your fees as it normally would, the same way it does for hours outside the 15 funded ones.
Do I need to apply for Free Kindy myself?
No. Because we're an approved kindergarten program, the funding is applied automatically once your child is enrolled and eligible, so there's no separate form for you to submit.
Can I combine Free Kindy with the Child Care Subsidy?
Yes, and most families do. CCS is calculated on your session fee first, and Free Kindy then reduces what's left of your gap fee. It doesn't reduce the amount your CCS is calculated on. The two work alongside each other, not instead of each other.
Are my two Kindy days completely free?
The 15 hours of kindergarten itself are completely free, funded by the Queensland Government. Because we run as long day care rather than a stand-alone 7.5-hour session, your child's two Kindy days also include wraparound care either side of that funded time, with your Child Care Subsidy applied. Most families are left with a small, manageable gap fee, and your child enjoys the security of a full day of care alongside their kindergarten program.
Will I still pay anything for kindergarten?
The kindergarten program itself, 15 hours a week, is completely free. Most families do have a small gap fee for the wraparound care either side of those funded hours, since our days run as long day care rather than a stand-alone 7.5-hour session, and your Child Care Subsidy applies to that time. Tell your Campus Manager your CCS percentage and they'll tell you exactly what your days will cost. If you don't know your percentage, they'll help you work it out. You can also use the Australian Government's CCS estimator.
What if my child only attends two days a week?
Two days a week is the minimum to access the 15 funded hours, so your child is fully covered for the kindergarten program itself. Because we run as long day care rather than a stand-alone 7.5-hour session, those two days also include wraparound care either side, with your Child Care Subsidy applied, so most families have a small, manageable gap fee alongside the free kindy hours. Your Campus Manager can talk you through your specific days.
What if my child attends more than 15 hours a week?
The extra hours are treated like any other long day care hours: CCS applies to reduce the gap fee, but they're not covered by Free Kindy itself.
Is Free Kindy income-tested?
No. Every eligible child receives the same 15 hours a week, regardless of family income. Your income only affects your CCS percentage on the hours outside Free Kindy.
What does the kindergarten program actually teach?
It's a government-approved program delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher, built around play-based learning. Children build early language, literacy and numeracy alongside social skills, emotional regulation and problem-solving, and develop the gross and fine motor skills, friendships and independence that carry them into school.
Who teaches kindergarten at Little Scholars?
A qualified early childhood teacher, at every campus, delivering the Queensland kindergarten learning guideline.
How does kindergarten prepare my child for school?
Through our Transition to School Program, which runs as part of kindergarten. Children practise the everyday things that matter on day one: getting into their own lunchbox, tying shoelaces, wearing a school uniform to campus, visiting the school they'll attend. Every child finishes the year with a transition statement that goes with them to Prep.
Why is my child's Free Kindy delivered as part of a long day care day, not a stand-alone session?
Little Scholars delivers kindergarten within long day care, which means your child gets the structured kindergarten program plus the wraparound care of a full day, before and after the funded hours, on the days you need it. The 15 funded hours are simply the portion of that day the government pays for, so the wraparound time isn't part of Free Kindy and your Child Care Subsidy applies to it in the normal way.
What's the difference between kindergarten and Prep?
Kindergarten is the year before school, run by early learning providers like Little Scholars under the Queensland kindergarten guideline. Prep is the first year of primary school itself. Free Kindy funds the kindergarten year only.
Is Free Kindy a temporary program, or is it ongoing?
Free Kindy is confirmed to continue beyond 2026. As with any government initiative, the specific funding terms are set by the Queensland Government and can change. We'll always apply whatever the current funding rules are for your child's enrolment.
How do I find out exactly what my fees will be?
The clearest way is to speak to your Campus Manager directly. Tell them your CCS percentage, or let them help you find it, and they'll give you a fee figure based on your child's actual days.
How do I get started?
Book a tour at your nearest campus. We'll show you around, answer your questions, and once you're ready, help you through enrolment. Free Kindy is applied automatically, so there's nothing extra for you to sign up for.
